On The Ground - July 2021

College des Saviors

This month, the Club of Leaders (CoL) worked through the 5 leadership skills while studying fruit trees in the Mpasa community. The students completed an observation walk researching fruit trees and how they are used within the Mpasa community. The collected data was analyzed and showed that while a lot of households in Mpasa have fruit trees there is not much diversity in types of trees. The students decided in order to learn more about a variety of fruit trees, they should travel to the Botanic Garden in downtown Kinshasa.

On July 17, twenty five students traveled to the Botanic Garden and learned about various types of fruit trees. Not only were the students able to learn about fruit trees, they also got to sample some aloe leaves and fruit. After the field trip, students reflected, using the familiar quadrant, and answered the questions “What works well?, What proves it?, What did not work?, How to improve next time or in the future?”. The students planned a Community Service Action (CSA) for July 31 that reached out in order to educate the Mpasa community about the importance of having a variety of fruit trees.
