On The Ground - May/June ‘24
Club of Leaders (CoL)
Students from the CoL recently conducted a thorough walkthrough of the Hebrone community, engaging in a survey to delve deeper into local hygiene practices and explain innovative uses for ash. They focused on identifying community strengths, pinpointing challenges, and formulating critical questions. After compiling their findings, students generated the next question that will drive their research and community service action project. How are we, the members of the Hebrone Leaders Club (students, parents, teachers, administrators and MR team) going to help the community to make available and use good quality ash for hand washing, in toilets and other uses to prevent disease and be healthy? Mr. Pombo, Malembe Rise CoL facilitator, stated “I was happy with this observation walk because the students demonstrated what they are capable of. They communicated with community members who recognized having learned from the students. I liked the promotion of the ashes in a practical way with hand washing and use in toilets which was appreciated by community members promising to continue this practice. Also there was very rich interaction between students and community members.”
CoL and PAEV/UNICEF
PAEV/UNICEF and the CoL are teaming up to create a sanitized school where every student has access to clean water, hygienic toilets, and proper handwashing facilities. Central to this effort is the Malembe Rise team's challenge to integrate students into every aspect of the project. From researching current sanitation practices to participating in the implementation phase under supervision, students are gaining hands-on experience and fostering a sense of ownership. They will also receive education on hygiene practices and become ambassadors within their community, ensuring sustainability and a broader impact beyond the school grounds.
