On The Ground - May/June 2023
Club of Leaders (CoL)
On June 4th, Hebron’s CoL held their Fete de Presentation for the entire school and surrounding community. The event was well attended by students, teachers, community members, the police commander, a local painter, a professor from UNIKIN, and several representatives from other NGOs.
Students presented songs, poems, and skits that stressed the importance of good hygiene. The student presentations demonstrated that learning can occur not only in the traditional school setting but instead everywhere within the community. The Fete culminated with a tour of the new toilets and hand washing devices that were designed and built by the students using local assets.
Equipped with their knowledge and experience, the students have started to plan their Community Service Action (CSA). Over the next several months, the students will go into the community to share and model what they have learned about creating a hygienic toileting area.
Praise for the Fete de Presentation:
I am very satisfied because the students used their local materials. I saw bamboo, I saw recycled bottles, twigs… The truth is that children continue like this at the primary and secondary school level and when they go to university they can solve even the biggest problems that we have in our society that we all decry. ~Professor Raymond
This project is so impressive because it teaches students problem-solving, to think together about how they can use what they have to take care of their needs. Everyone has the right to clean water, to privacy and they have found a way to create that here together. They did it in a group and learned leadership skills. Their presentation skills today were so impressive. ~Professor Beth, USA
