On The Ground - Nov/Dec ‘24
During recent Club of Leaders (CoL) meetings, students have been actively involved in hands-on projects aimed at improving Hebrone School and its surrounding grounds. Over the past two months, their efforts have included building classroom benches, digging a new hole for the school’s toilet, and cleaning the school grounds. The older students took the lead in construction work, reinforcing the wall of the new toilet, while the younger students focused on maintaining the school's cleanliness and watering the Baobab tree. Mr. Chançard, a CoL facilitator, shared his thoughts: "I was impressed by how the students were able to show their determination and bring their dream of building benches from bamboo to life. They demonstrated creativity and initiative in making it happen." Activities like these not only help students develop practical skills but also foster a sense of responsibility and connection to their community.
At the annual Fête de Présentation, CoL students had the opportunity to showcase their contributions to the Hebrone School and its environment. One group presented a sketch illustrating the school’s journey from poor hygiene to a cleaner, healthier environment—a transformation that included a partnership with UNICEF, which helped construct toilets and a well. Another group educated the community on the benefits of using ash for sanitation. Additionally, students highlighted ongoing needs, such as the absence of classroom benches, and their commitment to addressing these challenges using local resources. The students’ creativity, leadership, and problem-solving skills were met with great appreciation, highlighting the impact the Club is making within the community.
The event also marked the inaugural presentation of the Director Misala Award, established in honor of the late Director Misala and his legacy of skill, dedication, and leadership. A committee of students, teachers, and community members evaluated the candidates and selected three outstanding students—Doka Epombo, Kaziko Miradi, and Taku Waya—as the first recipients. Sarah, the US Country Director, had the honor of presenting the awards to the students, who received enthusiastic applause for their achievements. This new tradition not only honors Director Misala’s legacy but also serves to inspire the next generation of leaders within the CoL community.
